Set Free, Indeed

Juneteenth reminds us of a powerful and painful moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, finally heard the news that they were free. Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, many were still living under the cruelty of slavery, unaware that freedom had already been declared.

Can you imagine the feelings these men and women must have experienced in that moment? I'm guessing it was a combination of joy, disbelief, relief, grief, and perhaps even anger that freedom had been theirs by law, yet withheld from them for so long. I imagine some stood stunned beneath the weight of it: the life they had prayed for, longed for, and maybe feared to hope for had finally been spoken aloud.

I can't help but make a connection between the celebration of Juneteenth, and the gift of freedom offered to each one of us by Jesus. It makes me question if I'm living in the freedom already declared over my life.

Scripture tells us that Jesus came to proclaim freedom to the captives, to break the chains of sin and shame, and to invite the weary into His rest. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has declared liberty over all who trust in Him. And yet, many of us still live as though we are bound.

We carry shame that He has already forgiven. We strive to earn love that He has already freely given. We bow beneath the heavy yoke of religious legalism, trying to prove ourselves worthy, when Jesus has invited us to take His yoke instead; a yoke that is easy, a burden that is light. We may know with our heads that Christ has set us free, but our hearts can still live in captivity to fear, performance, guilt, or the expectations of others.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom finally received and lived. It reminds us that freedom must not only be declared; it must be believed, embraced, and walked in.

So, this Juneteenth, as we celebrate the true end of slavery in the United States, it might be a good time to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where we are still living in bondage, to give us the strength to surrender every chain Jesus already broke, and to live as those set free by Christ. Free, indeed.
